HiSET® Exam

What is the HiSET?

HiSET® stands for High School Equivalency Test. Passing the HiSET is an alternative pathway to graduating high school or taking the GED®. First released in 2014, the HiSET exam consists of 285 multiple-choice questions followed by one essay question.

What is the difference between the GED® and the HiSET?

The HiSET tests you in five test categories, while the GED has only four sections. On both exams, you are tested in mathematics, social studies, science, and language arts. The HiSET splits language arts into two subcategories: reading and writing.

The GED is an online exam. The HiSET can be taken online or on paper— making it a good alternative for those who aren’t used to working on a computer. Both tests result in the same credential, a high school equivalency diploma.
