Sanitarians investigate health and safety within an environment. They are public health specialists who identify risks and enforce environmental regulations, health, and safety.

Where can a sanitarian work?

Sanitarians commonly work in public health divisions of states, counties, cities, and towns. They conduct inspections for settings such as food service establishments, healthcare facilities, swimming pools, and water treatment facilities.

How do you become a sanitarian?

To become a Sanitarian it is recommended that you complete some level of postsecondary training to gain experience. While some entry-level positions may be filled with individuals that are bachelor’s degree prepared, many employers require education at the master’s level. Additional certifications can advance your career as a Sanitarian, such as the Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian certification offered by the National Environmental Health Association.
