Master Promissory Note (MPN)

What is a Master Promissory Note (MPN)?

A Master Promissory Note (MPN) is a legal document you sign when taking out federal student loans to help pay for your college education. The promissory note outlines the details, terms, and conditions of your student loans, including any fees and interest you must pay to the U.S. Department of Education.

Do I have to sign a Master Promissory Note?

Yes. Signing the MPN is your promise to repay your loan(s) to the U.S. Department of Education. You may have one or more master promissory notes depending on the school you are attending and any previous student loans you may have. You can preview or complete your MPN by logging on to your account on the Federal Student Aid website, www.studentaid.gov.

Do I have to take out student loans?

Your financial picture is unique, and paying for college looks different for each student. When you go to college, you will fill out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year. The FAFSA will help determine your eligibility for the different types of financial aid available, including federal student loans. Our Financial Aid department is committed to helping you identify financial aid opportunities that make attending college more affordable.
