New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE)

What is NECHE?

The New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) is responsible for evaluating higher learning institutions in New England— ensuring they meet the highest academic standards and appropriately prepare students for careers. While NECHE is a nonprofit and nongovernmental association, the U.S. Department of Education recognizes the Commission as an esteemed accreditor of colleges and universities.

Why is NECHE accreditation important?

NECHE accreditation serves several functions, including:

  • Educational quality and services: To earn NECHE accreditation, universities and colleges must meet peer-reviewed standards for academic programs, faculty qualifications, and student services.
  • Eligibility for federal funding: Attending a school that is not accredited may affect your ability to receive federal financial aid.
  • Ability to transfer credits: When you earn credits at a NECHE-accredited university, it is more likely the credits will count if you transfer to a new institution.
  • Public image and respectability: Because accreditation requires institutions to meet rigorous standards, NECHE-accredited schools gain higher favorability and respectability.
